Research Overview

The Exercise and Health Behavior in Oncology Laboratory (EHBOL) focuses on advancing behavioral science by developing, implementing, and evaluating exercise and health behavior interventions among cancer survivors from historically marginalized backgrounds to reduce cancer-related burdens.

The EHBOL merges health behavior change theories and dissemination and implementation science to ask the following research questions:

  • What is the optimal approach to promote both exercise and other health behaviors among cancer survivors from historically marginalized backgrounds?
  • What are the most salient psychosocial outcomes and determinants of improve exercise and other health behaviors?
  • What is the most impactful method to implement exercise and physical activity and other health behavior interventions among cancer survivors in clinical and community-based settings within New Jersey and beyond?

Breast cancer and Resistance Exercise Program (B-REP)

In this study, we want to understand the ability for Black/African-American/Black Latina/e breast cancer survivors to do strength training (also known as resistance exercise or weightlifting). Survivors will be randomly assigned to exercise either on their own or with a trainer using Zoom.

Participants will be asked to participate in:

  • 3 exercise assessments
  • 3 questionnaires
  • 12 weekly exercise sessions (exercising 1 to 2 times per week) done at home on their own or over Zoom with a trainer
  • Wearing an activity tracker for 7 days at 3 time points

Participants will receive:

  • $50 e-gift cards (3 in total) after successfully returning the activity tracker
  • A personalized exercise program developed by an exercise specialist
  • Resistance bands and/or small hand weights
