Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and RWJBarnabas Health in collaboration with New Jersey Medical School/University Hospital Liver Transplantation group serve as the state’s only multidisciplinary healthcare team focused on liver, gallbladder, and bile duct tumors as well as pre-malignant lesions.  

As the largest referral center in the state for these cancers, the multidisciplinary group of health care professionals comes together to provide multidisciplinary, comprehensive, high-quality, compassionate, and personalized care tailored to meet the needs of each individual patient with the following cancers:

  • Liver Cancer (Primary liver cancer and metastatic disease to the liver)
  • Gallbladder Cancer
  • Bile duct Cancer
  • Premalignant and benign lesions of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts

We treat a wide range of liver, gallbladder, and bile duct cancers, ranging from a primary cancer diagnosis such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), and gallbladder cancer to metastatic liver cancer such as colorectal cancer, neuroendocrine cancer, and others.  

Furthermore, we manage and treat a large variety of premalignant and benign liver, gallbladder, and bile duct lesions, such as hepatic adenomas, hepatic cysts, bile duct congenital abnormalities such as choledochal cysts, gallbladder polyps, and traumatic injuries to these structures such as bile duct injuries.

As New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center, we offer the latest and most cutting-edge diagnostic and surgical therapies, such as robotic surgery; liver parenchyma sparing techniques; microwave ablation navigation therapy; hepatic arterial infusion pump therapy; liver transplantation for HCC as well as unresectable colorectal liver metastases, perhilar cholangiocarcinoma (Klatskin’s tumor), and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, all delivered throughout the state of New Jersey with care close to home.

In addition to serving our patients, the surgical oncologists at Rugters Cancer Institute of New Jersey are dedicated to educating the next generation and future leaders in the field of surgical oncology, housing the only Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program within the state of New Jersey.
